MXene-based integrated electrodes for lithium-sulfur battery research and new progress

Recently, researchers from the 2D Materials and Energy Devices Research Group (DNL21T3) of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Wu Zhongshuai, researcher of advanced secondary battery (DNL0306) Chen Jian and researcher Wang Xiaohui of the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, collaborated to create a complete MXene-based system. Sulfur cathodes were demonstrated and proved to have excellent lithium-sulfur battery performance. Related research results were published in the ACS Nano.

MXene is a new type of two-dimensional metal carbon (nitrogen) nanosheets. The common Ti3C2 MXene has an accordion-like multi-layered structure, with large particle size, limited pore volume and specific surface area, and it is difficult to achieve excellent performance as a sulfur-loaded matrix. Electrochemical properties. Recently, the research team used the MXene-derived alkalized nanoribbon (a-Ti3C2) network structure as a sulfur-loaded matrix on the basis of the previous work of MXene (Nano Energy, ACS Nano) to strip the MXene nanosheets (d-Ti3C2). ) As an intermediate layer that restricts the effect of polysulfide shuttles, an innovative full-MXene-based integrated sulfur cathode was created to eliminate the use of metal current collectors. The a-Ti3C2 network structure has interconnected macroporous structure and high specific surface area, enabling high sulfur loading and fast ion transport. The middle layer of d-Ti3C2 nanosheets can effectively prevent the polysulfide shuttle effect from occurring through physical barriers or chemical adsorption, thereby achieving excellent lithium-sulfur battery performance. This work was the first to propose a strategy for functional integration of different MXene nanostructures, which is expected to be widely used in other types of batteries and supercapacitors.

The above work was funded by the National Key R&D Program, the Dalian Institute of Chemicals and the Qingdao Energy Integration Fund, the National Youth Talents Program, and the China Postdoctoral Fund.
